is my pc worth updating?

happy new year to all of you hope you had a good xmas and that!!!little question......this is my pc:nvidia 6800gs pcie, 2gb ram, amd athlon 64 3700 cpu, asrock 939 mobo, xp sp2, hanns g lcd 19'' w/s.i am playing cod4 and moh air with settings right down which is fine, for now.if i want those two games to play at top whack and i buy a 8800gt would that be enough or would my cpu let me down.i also wasn't sure if i should wait until the nvidia 9 series comes out to see if the prices drop for the 8800gt or if they release a card better than the gt for roughly the same money.could anyone advise me on this. i have if the truth be told just bought the 8800gt for ?50 but they are out of stock so i have a little grace..............yes i panick bought and i wanted a treat..............so have i made the right choice, should i unbuy it and rethink?thoughts please and thankyou for your time.cheersdirtis my pc worth updating?
The 8800 should do you fine, but you might want to consider bumping up that cpu. Also, where did you buy that 8800 from?is my pc worth updating?
here's the cardhttp://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4XKB%26CategorySelectedId=11137%26PageMode=1%26NavigationKey=11137,48070000,50509review of the fan on it is also pretty good for the heat, what do you think?cheers for the replydirt
Just make sure you have a good case fan and that should do you well.Have fun with your new card!
do you think my processor will hold me back.....perhaps i could afford to upgrade in a few months time to a quad maybe?would my motherboard take a quad?i'll have to upgrade that then too.i'm gunna have to start from scratch here i can see it.thanks for the replycheersdirt
its better just to build a brand new computer to a with a socket AM2
i think i'll get the card and start saving for a total new build in 12 months time after decorating 2 kids bedrooms the hall and stairs the living room..............getting the dishwasher and a new oven and then i'll see if there's any change left for me.............nope hold it'll be next christmas then!!!hopefully the card should give me some fun for the next year but i'll have to watch the heat...........there's the cpu fan, the psu fan one fan sucking out from the case and one blowing across from the back......do you think i should buy some extra cooling or just open the case and waft it with my hand whilst playing call of duty 4? i'm not good at custom stuff, scared i'll blow myself up!!thanks againdirt
You could probably squeeze a little more life out of that system. You can get an x2 dual core 939 for pretty cheap. Your current processor would bottleneck an 8800GT(but so would an x2). If your set on just upgrading to the 8800 and upgrading everything else later you would still a huge improvement in games though.
pop in a nice 939 dual core opty and an 8800 or 3870 and your set
8800GT would be OVERKILL for said games,if you ain't playing anything demanding like Crysis, you can get away with a HD 2600XT or 8600GT,or a HD 3850 at the most.
thanks for replies people.i can't really afford to go further at this point.........the wife is already giving me the evils.do you think i should not bother getting the card at all until i can afford a full upgrade or do you think it's still worth it.if i upgrade in about 6 to 12months and had bought the 8800gt i may have wasted my money on the card.what do you think?don't forget the card isn't mine yet so i can still cancel it...................i may sulk for a while though!!cheersdirt
I'd recommend waiting a while myself. Your rig is a bit dated, at most you may want to get a bit better gpu, but I wouldn't recommend getting an 8800GT unless you want to get a better cpu as well, your RAM is still great though =).
I'd just get a cheap PCI-e card like the 2600XT. It should hold you off till you can afford something better. Also, your processor is fine; you shouldn't be upgrading until you get either a Nehalem, AM2+, or AM3 CPU.
For around $300 you can get an X2 3600+ and a Ati 3870 and be set for another year or two.
just out of interest what do you think i could get for my machine now?2 years ago i paid ?35 for it.amd 3700 64 bit processor, as rock mobo 939, 2 gb ram, dvdrw, floppy, xp home, 6800gs gpu, dragon case with psu.i only got 1gb ram though and bought more later.could i get ?00 for it or am i stretching far to much.i could save up ?00 add it to that and get a good system................help please i am sulking big style now.i will cancel the 8800gt and wait i think...............any last thoughts before i cancel the card and spit my dummy out.
I couldn't say what you'd get for it in pounds, but I'd expect about $300-400 USD. That plus whatever 400 pounds equates too could buy you a very nice computer. Also, most people on this forum wouldn't know what 'spit the dummy' means.
i don't mind buying the 8800gt now if it'll play the games i mentioned earlier at top whack but it might be a waste of money if i buy it then build a new pc in say 12 months which will render the card useless (or at least render it in the same way the gpu upgrade would render the cpu now.guess i'm still unsure what to do.........some of the cards refered to earlier are good yes but not that much cheaper than what i can get a gt for so in my eyes i may as well pay the extra ?0 or whatever and get the better card.please answer these questions so i can get things clear in my own mind........and thankyou for replying.1). will the 8800gt and my processor run these games at full whack or will the processor cause problems?2). if i get the gt card now will it be a girls blouse when i come to do a new build say in 12 months and kind of leave me in the position i am in now?3). if i sell my machine (just the base unit) will anyone tell me how to build my own pc (step by step like a baby sucking mommy's boob for the first time) so i don't blow myself up or waste one component worth ?00 on it's own.4). can i really build my own pc cheaper than a shop can (keeping in mind that they get parts cheaper for trade etc).5). does anyone want to buy a really cool gaming machine for about ?00?6). when is clark from smallville ever going to fly for real, wear his pants on the outside of his trousers and bum lana lang?7). should i wait for the nvidia 9 series to come out incase this forces the price of the 8800gt to drop dramatically?8). if they use a mouse for 1st person shootups on a console would a console be the better purchase choice in the long run?these questions are no longer rhetorical.................i need answers.......................or maybe just a kip.cheersdirt
Well since you already bought the 8800GT, save it and down the line you can pop it into a new rig when you get the cash.
1.) An 8800GT will run any game besides Flight Sim X, Supreme Commander, and Crysis at 'Full Whack'.2.) It'll still be decent in 12 months, but you might feel like upgrading again.3.) Yes. Ask here or just Google it.4.) Yes.5.) Ask on Craigslist.6.) 42.7.) It probably won't have any effect on the 8800GT, but I'd wait just due to performance.8.) They haven't,don't, and probably won't,and FPSs are better on the PC anyway.9.) Less British-isms.
the gt is out of stock so i can cancel in the next few days if i want.........so where dows that leave me in terms of the above questions?maybe not the smallville thing!
