Im currently running an HPa1600n,heres the specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00749157%26cc=us%26dlc=en%26lc=en%26jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN#N299 Im upgrading to a GeForce 8800GT 512MB, 2 more gigs and a power supply so that I can run Crysis and other games...I've received a great deal of help from gamespot...being totally new to the gaming thing this place has help. With what I've learned I may suffer a little bottlenecking and considering a newer CPU to help things along. I know nothing about them or doing it.....is this a similar plug and play upgrade or is there more to it......what CPU what you guys recommend?TYVM AMD builders help.
Your CPU is decent, you don't really need an upgrade. A much powerfull CPU will bring you ~ 5fps and that is not muchAMD builders help.
anything else should I consider?
anything else should I consider?
If it supports it then the amd 5000+ black edition would be good and its only $100 and has an unlocked multiplier.
how would I know it supports it?
The mobo socket is AM2, it will support it. ;)
is this a plug and play upgrade or is there more to it.
Honestly I think the only thing holding that PC back is the video card..... with ram being the mild secondary thing.if you don't want to spend a lot of money, you should be pretty impressed with the cheaper 8600GT card (especially, considering what you're using now, with that intergraded piece of...). That is.... newegg has some for around 70 bucks after mail-in rebate. GTS is slightly faster.... at about a 40-80 dollar increase. 8800 series.... you are going into the $200-$500 range.... with the ultras going for 600+. As for memory... that's kinda hard.... I mean.... PC2 6400 is kinda the memory that most motherboards are rated up to, now. My guess is the motherboard only handles up to PC2 4200, so guess you'll just have to stick with that, if you wanna upgrade the ram. But the thing to consider is if you do get a newer board in the future. That PC2 4200 will most likely never get reused....again. But there's nothing wrong with staying with 1 gig, either.... Just weighing out your pro's and con's is all.... Basicly, what I'm saying is that any money you sink into the ram.... will be a short-term solution. It's money that will most likely not be carried over to any possible future motherboard upgrade....I wonder if dual channel is activated? You need two sticks for it to activate.... meaning you would have two 512 sticks, if it is.... and only 2 more Dimm slots open. Download 'CPU-z'.... it'll tell you what sticks are loaded, and it will tell you the settings tables for the sticks as well..... and on another tab it will tell you what the sticks are actually running at. Could be of help in any upgrades... and will help you in finding the timing you want to be matching for any memory purchases, if you do buy any. It'll tell you if it's in Dual channel mode, too.... on the tab that shows what the memory is actively running at.... It's say duel mode in the upper right corner if it's running in that mode... Think it'll be grayed out if it isn't, but not sure.... There is a pulldown tab, as well, that will tell you if the Dimm slot is empty or has a chip in it...... If you have 2 sticks, most likely duel channel mode is on.... You want it on.....
