So I've been in a bit of a predicament. I'm really a noob at PC's, but I understand the basics. I want to upgrade my video card because the last time I did was with a 6600. So I've been looking on Newegg all day, and see that I can get an 8600 GT for about a hundred bucks. This works really well for me, because I'd be guessing the 8600 would be a huge, huge improvement over the 6600, and I would be able to run TF2 well, and someone said they even could run Crysis on medium with it.So my question is, should I go for the 8600? Or would it be a bad idea? Thanks guys.So should I go for the 8600?
its good for its price but id get the 2600xt for the same price since its a little better http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102700 So should I go for the 8600?
Hmm, so that card would be better than getting an 8600 GT?
Hmm, so that card would be better than getting an 8600 GT?
yes but not by a huge amount tho
Heres a 8600GTS its 115 after rebate buts its 145 without and its a little faster than the gthttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130084
Yo man just wait another month or two and get a 8800GTS, the 8600 is a decent card but why buy something that will be totally obsolete in another 3 months. It's a mid range card so you should upgrade to the best thing now so your not left in the dust when some visually spectacular games start coming out. You'll be able to run Crysis at a solid 30fps with the 8800GTS (which is still a joke) smoothly.
Just go ahead and buy the 8600GT 512MB.. I can play all games on high settings.. Except for CRYSIS which i can play on medium with a few options turned high.. Guess what CRYSIS looks really cool even on medium..So bro just go ahead and buy 8600GT if u wanna buy a card now.. If u can curb ur enthusiasm for a new card for sometime then u mite well get a 8800GT for 125 bucks or so since the 9 series cards are gonna come out and prices for all predessecors will be slashed..
The 8600 series is great, just don't expect to play future games on the highest settings using the highest resolutions. If you plan on playing games that came out late 2006 and earlier, a 8600 will be able to max them out most likely (depnding on your CPU and RAM of course). If you are dead set on getting a 8600, I reccomend the XFX 8600GT XXX.
Hey you said the last time you upgraded your gfx was TO a 6600. Do you have pci-e or agp?
No dont buy the 8600.The ATI cards are the best in this range.Look at the 2900GT or pro. They would demolish any 8600.
Hey you said the last time you upgraded your gfx was TO a 6600. Do you have pci-e or agp?
yeah, i was going to ask the same question. Mostly he has AGP

I kind of just handed my computer to a shop last time and said ''Upgrade this so that I can play CS;S'' I DO know the difference though, and will check later tonight.

About the comaprsion between 8800GTS %26 8800GT, imho 8800GTS because ive found at many sites that the difference between the cheapest GT and the cheapest GTS is something near 30~50$ and it worths it for sure.
Before it was at least 100$ so it was worthless and everybody wasnt recommending it.

I have a 256MB DDR3 8600GTS and it can run most of my games on max. resolution.F.e. it can run TOCA 3 on highest settings/resoltion.Actually all my games run great except for one, Colin McRae 04 (old I know). On that game all settings are maxed but if I use maximum resolution, I have a very small framedrop now and then, so I have to select the 2nd best resolution, then it runs great.I'm not a pro in the whole PC world too..

Get the XFX 8600GT with the 680MHz core clock and the big Zalman fan. Just go on newegg and search xfx 8600gt then look at all the ones with big zalman fans and find the one with the 680MHz core clock. It should run crysis medium with a little high at medium res.

The 8600gt I bought had 540MHz as the core clock, I overclocked it to 700MHz myself with ATItool, saved a few $'s.
